From April 18 to 21, 2013, and on the invitation of organizers Shannon Stratton (Threewalls, Chicago, IL), Abigail Satinsky (Threewalls), Courtney Fink (Southern Exposure, San Francisco, CA), Elizabeth Chodos, (Ox-Bow, Saugatuck, MI/Chicago, IL) and Nat May (SPACE, Portland, ME), ARCA board member Jonathan Middleton (PAARC; Or Gallery) attended a convening of nearly 30 arts administrators from artist-run and artist-focused arts organizations from across the United States. Participants gathered at Ox-Bow in Saugatuck, Michigan, an art school and centre for artist residencies located on the Kalamazoo river, to build on dialogue started earlier at the Hand in Glove meeting, held in 2010 at Threewalls, Chicago, Illinois. Many of the 2010 panel discussions and keynote presentation by Nato Thompson can be viewed on the Threewalls website.
Together, those in attendance at the Ox-Bow gathering discussed the possibilities of associating as a means to create a face for the field of not-for-profit, artist-run and artist-centred grassroots organizations as well as a platform for connecting with peers and supporting mission and discourse.
