ABOUT ARCA: Artist-Run Centres and Collectives Conference / La Conférence des collectifs et des centres d’artistes autogérés (ARCA) is a national arts service organization (NASO) bringing together nine artist-run associations from across Canada collectively representing over 180 artist-run centres each serving unique geographies and communities of artists and arts professionals. Artist-Run Centres (ARC) currently form an intricate network spanning across Canada comprising arts presentation spaces, exhibition venues, artists’ studios, production facilities, arts hubs, collective spaces, archives, publishing houses, magazines, bookstores and festivals.
ARCA Programming & Education
ARCA programs bring organizations, mentors and emerging arts professionals together from across Canada. The location of our current program actions are primarily from home within digital workspaces as all activities are development-based preparing arts professionals for major presentations and digital dissemination. As a virtual program the Education Coordinator will be working off-site, from their home while corresponding directly with our head-office in Ontario as the base of operations and place of employment. This program is designed to offer valuable work experience through a facilitated virtual creation process working with ARCA staff, curators, designers and artist mentors on various major projects. The Education Coordinator will be engaging more than 180 galleries, collectives and festivals while producing both independent creation processes and working towards large-scale collaborative developments. This position develops creative, communication, coordination and administrative skills through virtual gatherings and collaborative exchanges where all workers witness, learn and share together.
Job Description: ARCA programs bring organizations, mentors and emerging arts professionals together from across Canada and the Education Coordinator is central to the planning, implementation and dissemination of the associated education actions. The location of ARCA programs over the next 12 months are primarily from home within digital workspaces as all activities are development-based preparing arts professionals for major presentations and digital dissemination in the future. As a virtual program all employees will be working off-site, from their homes across Canada while still corresponding directly with our head-office in Ontario as our base of operations and place of employment.
Programming & Market Development
- Maintain and contribute towards a work environment that is safe and free of prejudice and discrimination.
- Work with artist-run centres and stakeholders in developing time-sensitive ARCA programming.
- Co-design, deliver and facilitate programs as part of ARCA public programming.
- Facilitate meetings and correspondence for ARCA major development projects co-designing arts frameworks for public presentations including but not limited to Block-Booking, Block-Marketing, Contact Events, Networking, Presenter Conferences, Tool Development & Workshops.
- Engage in critical discourse regarding Artist-Run Culture, Performance Art and Gallery Culture to explore the intersection points between people and places and disseminate the artist-run movement across Canada and outwards globally.
- Responsible for ensuring the booking meetings with artists, curators, designers and program stakeholders is conducted for relevant projects including sending out confirmations and complete follow up actions as required.
- Coordinate ARCA mail-out campaign, coordinate packing and shipping.
- Ability to support and build digital and virtual promotional and educational resources as part of a team.
- Ability to interact with many peers and audiences from many backgrounds.
- Excellent communicator that is adaptive, open-minded and interested in working in a group setting.
- Creative thinking required for contributing towards program development.
- Experience in research, analytical, critical and/or writing skills for contributing towards creating new programs.
- Demonstrated project management skills and experience with time-sensitive projects.
- Exceptional organizational skills, problem solving and attention to detail.
- Ability to multifunction, work under pressure and meet multiple deadlines.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated planning and scheduling skills.
- Proficiency in various computer software including Microsoft Office and/or Adobe softwares.
- Proficiency in Zoom – knowledge running virtual Webinars an asset.
- Bilingual (French and English) is a major asset, or knowledge of second-language.
The Education Coordinator position develops creative, communication, coordination and administrative skills through facilitating virtual gatherings that support and develop cultural capacity or the arts sector. The independent and collaborative work that is produced during the program has many opportunities to build a much needed track record within a professional arts setting removing barriers and offering access for an improved artistic career path.
CANDIDATES: ARCA has various employment and training programs working between multiple government agencies. We accept applicants with a career focus on an arts-related field of study including any artistic background, genre or category. We are seeking creative contributors that want to facilitate large-scale events and produce a body of work either alone or through collaborative environments and that are seeking mentorship or support in their development. We welcome all applications but have limited positions. The Education Coordinator position is designed for entry level early career arts professionals who are interested in challenging themselves and becoming part of a large community of professional artists, curators and designers working in and around artist-run culture. Anyone working within the field of study of all areas of illustration, design, arts management, arts administration or any genre of artistic practice may apply. As a digital program, we strongly encourage applicants to have basic computer skills and access to participate in digital activations on a daily basis.

HOW TO APPLY: An ideal Education Coordinator candidate has pursued the arts actively through their education and graduated from an accredited institution. This position is funded in part through the Young Canada Works at Building Careers in Heritage program, and all applicants must be registered in the YCW candidate pool and meet the current YCW-BCH eligibility criteria. An individual may be eligible for an internship if they:
- are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible);
- are legally entitled to work in Canada;
- are between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;
- are willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment;
- will not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while employed with the program;
- are unemployed or underemployed;
- are a college or university graduate; and
- are not receiving Employment Insurance (EI) benefits while employed with the program.
Note: Priority will be given to graduates that have not previously participated in YCW internship programs.
