ARCA at Institutions by Artists: two artistic-socio-political activities

ARCA is pleased to join the Or Gallery in inviting members of our network to the premiere of Heidi Phillips’ video during a reception to be held October 11, at 6 p.m., in the Or Gallery foyer. With some of the material so generously provided by the centres, filmmaker Heidi Phillips was commissioned to produce a communications video capturing our network of artist-run centres in all its nuances and manifestations of vitality. Come join ARCA’s team of dedicated regional and cultural representatives as we raise a glass in recognition of our unique artist-run culture while also inaugurating the Institutions by Artists convention.

In another vital sign of artist-run networking, a plenary assembly of members will be held on Saturday, October 13, from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., at the World Art Centre. The aim of this meeting is to create a space for dialogue among peers. On the agenda: presence, feedback, listening. The meeting begins at 5 p.m. sharp, or as soon as five people have assembled. Sandwiches and refreshments will be served.

Heidi Phillips is an experimental filmmaker and installation artist from Manitoba, Canada with an affinity for the tactility of the filmic medium. Phillips’ often uses thrifted super 8 films, contact printing and darkroom experiments to push her work into new places. Phillips’ old school process frequently becomes part of the content, as grainy scratched films are merged with images lifted from found footage to create mesmerizing, transcendent works.
